THE MENACE OF ILLEGAL SAND MINING

Hindustan Times ST (Mumbai) - HT Navi Mumbai Live - - NAVI MUMBAI -

According to the environmentalists this illegal sand mining is wreaking havoc on the coastal belt of the city. “Because of illegal mining the greeneries along the creeks are getting affected. The violators destroy the mangroves and started dredging sand only for their benefit. If this menace is not stopped at the earliest it will damage the environment of the city irreversibly,” said Abba Ranvare, an environmentalist from the city

Officials from the tehsildar office, on the other hand, said that hamstrung by the lack of manpower, they cannot take right action at the right time. “For keeping the huge coastal belt of the city under surveillance we do not have sufficient manpower. Therefore, despite getting the right information our officials cannot reach the spots on time and can arrest the culprits. This is one of the main reasons why a majority of the culprits manage to run away from the mining sites,” said one official on condition of anonymity.
