NMMT checks, repairs buses to ensure smooth ride
NAVI MUMBAI: Commuters can expect a hassle-free journey this monsoon as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) is conducting their annual premonsoon checking and repair drive. The transport wing of the civic body will conduct checking, repairing and maintenance of the buses, training the drivers and conductors to deal with breakdowns, training staff to man the helpline numbers during the monsoon.
As a part of the preparations, which started at the beginning of the month, engineering staff are conducting an inspection of all the buses to check if there are any technical glitches and to ensure no breakdowns happen during the monsoon.
“We are inspecting all the 432 buses in lots and have already completed most of the work. Around 80-90 buses including standard and AC buses have been brought in for repair at the workshop in this month to avoid any kinds of disruptions and failures during the rainy season,” said Sabu Daniel, chairman of Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport.
Officials explained that during the inspection process, checking of tyres, brakes, bus wipers, leakage works, and lights and window repair fitting is done. To tackle commuter’s complaints and emergency breakdowns during the monsoon, the NMMT also launched a 24X7 toll-free number, 1800- 2674747 in 2014. Officials said that around 150 calls were registered on the number during the last two monsoons.
The same helpline number will be launched this year for aiding the passengers. “We will start the toll free helpline from June 15 onwards to provide assistance to passengers and give information about bus timings and schedules,” said Shirish Aradwad, transport manager, NMMT. The same assistance will also be provided om the Turbhe NMMT control room number, 27841828. “Once the monsoon starts we will publicize the numbers by putting up posters on all NMMT buses,” added the official.
Regular passengers of the
civic transport buses however said that these despite preparations, there are breakdowns and other problems every year during the monsoon.
The NMMT will become the first public transport body to operate a hybrid bus in the country.
