Pro boxers can now compete at Olympics
NEW DELHI: Professional boxers can compete in the Olympics provided they qualify for it, the sport’s world body said Wednesday.
But Indian Olympian Vijender Singh, who turned pro last June, was yet to decide whether he would be part of the contingent to Rio.
“I welcome AIBA’s decision to allow professional boxers to compete in Rio. I am yet to receive details. Since there is no federation in the country, I don’t know who will guide me on this,” said Singh, who won bronze in the 2008 Beijing Games. He said he was, for now, focused on his WBO Asia title fight in Delhi on July 16.
The landmark decision got a mixed response with Mike Tyson calling it “ridiculous” while Manny Pacquiao backed it.
