Police seek state govt legal dept’s view on Lata, Sachin videos
MUMBAI: The Special Branch (SB) of the Mumbai police have sought opinion from the state government’s legal department to ascertain if a case could be registered against comedian Tanmay Bhat for mocking Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar in a Snapchat video.
The Mumbai police said seeking opinion was part of the enquiry and that a decision will be taken by them and the legal cell officers in unison before the report is forwarded to the Mumbai police commissioner.
“We have seen transcripts of the video and are coordinating with the legal cell in order to share what we have gathered. The legal officers will take this into account and check the legal aspects before giving us their opinion,” said a senior police officer.
Investigators said a say on the final report will be based on what the legal cell suggests, which will be submitted soon. If all the wings concerned conclude that the act falls in the ambit of being prosecuted, a case will be registered with a police station.
The enquiry was initiated following Mumbai police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar’s order to the SB. The Mumbai police chief issued orders after he received a complaint in connection with the video.
