Po­lice seek state govt le­gal dept’s view on Lata, Sachin videos

MUMBAI: The Spe­cial Branch (SB) of the Mumbai po­lice have sought opin­ion from the state govern­ment’s le­gal de­part­ment to as­cer­tain if a case could be reg­is­tered against co­me­dian Tan­may Bhat for mock­ing Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Ten­dulkar in a Snapchat video.

The Mumbai po­lice said seek­ing opin­ion was part of the en­quiry and that a de­ci­sion will be taken by them and the le­gal cell of­fi­cers in uni­son be­fore the re­port is for­warded to the Mumbai po­lice com­mis­sioner.

“We have seen tran­scripts of the video and are co­or­di­nat­ing with the le­gal cell in or­der to share what we have gath­ered. The le­gal of­fi­cers will take this into ac­count and check the le­gal as­pects be­fore giv­ing us their opin­ion,” said a se­nior po­lice of­fi­cer.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said a say on the fi­nal re­port will be based on what the le­gal cell sug­gests, which will be sub­mit­ted soon. If all the wings con­cerned con­clude that the act falls in the am­bit of be­ing pros­e­cuted, a case will be reg­is­tered with a po­lice sta­tion.

The en­quiry was ini­ti­ated fol­low­ing Mumbai po­lice com­mis­sioner Datta Pad­sal­gikar’s or­der to the SB. The Mumbai po­lice chief is­sued or­ders after he re­ceived a com­plaint in con­nec­tion with the video.
