11 kgs cannabis seized, two held
CBD BELAPUR: The central unit of Navi Mumbai crime branch has seized ganja around 11 kg of ganja (cannabis) and arrested two people who were planning to sell it in the city.
It is one of the biggest seizures in Navi Mumbai in recent times. On Wednesday, assistant police inspector (crime) Krishna Kokni got a tip-off about a gang planning to sell ganja in the APMC area.
According to assistant commissioner of police ( crime) Nitin Kausdikar, “A raid was conducted on the road heading from APMC Mafco Circle to Prabhu Hira Ice cold storage around 4.15pm.”
He said, “Our team arrested Shamim Shaikh, 48, a resident of Khopoli in Raigad. A radiator repairer, Shaikh was found in possession of 10.982gm of ganja.”
Kausdikar said, “Following infor mation received f rom Shaikh, we arrested his accomplice, Rashid Rajput, 36. A poclain operator, Rajput is also a resident of Khopoli. He was arrested from McDonald’s bus stop at Khopoli.”
The police have recovered ganja and other property worth Rs1.37 lakh from the duo.
Kausdikar said, “This is one the biggest catches of ganja in the commissionerate in recent times. More importantly, we have got major sellers of the drug.”
He added, “We are investigating where they got the contraband from and other related information, including who they were planning to sell it to.”
