THANE: With the prediction of more than average rainfall this year, the Thane Municipal Corporation has issued high tide alerts to residents. The alerts indicate that July, when the monsoon is at its peak, has the maximum number of high tides. There will be three high tides on September 4 alone.

The tide information has been submitted by the Maritime Board and the municipal corporation has asked residents not to venture out of their homes unnecessarily if it rains heavily on high tide days.

A civic official, requesting anonymity, said, “There are 178 high tides in 106 days during the four months of monsoon. The tides are at their peak on September 4, when the city will see three tides almost as high as 5 metres. Usually, there are two high tides in a day.”

However, on this day the maritime board has alerted three tides in a day.

“If there is heavy rainfall on this day, it will be wise if people do not venture out of their homes,” he added.

June has 45 high tides. July has the highest 46 and 43 in

August and September both.

Last year, the rainfall was much less than the average rainfall of the district and thus the tides had not affected residents. This year, however, the district has announced 27 per cent more than the average rainfall and thus the alert was issued by the municipal corporation.

The high tide will also be higher than 5 metres for 17 times in these four months, said the official.

The department has geared up to face disaster this monsoon.

The disaster management

department has 14 boats owned by the municipal corporation and 57 boats owned by private individuals. They include machine boats, pedal boats and non-mechanised boats.

Hariyali lake, Jail Lake, Rewale Lake, Kolbad, Ambe Ghosale, Kausa and Khidkali have one TMC boat each while the remaining seven are with the disaster management and fire brigade department.
