NMMC ready to tackle rain mishaps
Help centres and control room set up in eight ward offices, hospitals stocked with medicines
CBD BELAPUR: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has readied a three-layer disaster management system to deal with monsoon-related emergencies.
The disaster management department has three administrative layers—ward office, zone and headquarters.
Deputy municipal commissioners have been appointed for all eight wards of NMMC as nodal officials. Executive engineers will work as zonal officials to monitor disaster relief work while the ward officers will form the third layer.
NMMC commissioner and chairman of disaster management committee, Tukaram Mundhe, said that help centres and control room have also been set up in eight ward offices of NMMC.
“The 24x7 regional disaster management control room at NMMC headquarters at CBD Belapur which functions throughout the year has been equipped further. Emergency control room has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and trained fire officials have been deployed in fire stations in Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Airoli each to respond to emergency calls,” said Mundhe.
Officials will take necessary measures to tackle natural disasters like flood, land slide during monsoon season and coordinate with each other to minimise the impact of such disasters.
Mundhe said, “The digging of roads for laying pipelines of various utilities has been stopped and repair and resurfacing work on damaged roads have been completed.”
Requisite stock of medicines is being maintained in all civic hospitals to treat people infected with communicable diseases during rain. Thirty beds have been reserved for patients who need urgent medical care at NMMC hospital, Vashi.
The central quick response centre at NMMC headquarters in CBD Belapur has been equipped with ultrasonic machine, ham radio and hotlines connected to 10 places including mantralaya, zilla parishad officer and railways for emergencies. It is also equipped with advanced meteorological equipment for rain forecast and to provide other weather information.
Mundhe has instructed officials to ensure gutters are cleaned at APMC market.
“I have asked officials of public works department to clean gutters from Vashi to Belapur and make sure that street lights on the road are working properly,” he said.
The NMMC will soon publish booklets of its disaster management plan which will have guidelines to assist disaster relief work and emergency contact numbers.
