NMMC ready to tackle rain mishaps

Help cen­tres and con­trol room set up in eight ward of­fices, hos­pi­tals stocked with medicines

CBD BE­LA­PUR: The Navi Mum­bai Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion (NMMC) has read­ied a three-layer dis­as­ter man­age­ment sys­tem to deal with mon­soon-re­lated emer­gen­cies.

The dis­as­ter man­age­ment de­part­ment has three ad­min­is­tra­tive lay­ers—ward of­fice, zone and head­quar­ters.

Deputy mu­nic­i­pal com­mis­sion­ers have been ap­pointed for all eight wards of NMMC as nodal of­fi­cials. Ex­ec­u­tive engi­neers will work as zonal of­fi­cials to mon­i­tor dis­as­ter re­lief work while the ward of­fi­cers will form the third layer.

NMMC com­mis­sioner and chair­man of dis­as­ter man­age­ment com­mit­tee, Tukaram Mundhe, said that help cen­tres and con­trol room have also been set up in eight ward of­fices of NMMC.

“The 24x7 re­gional dis­as­ter man­age­ment con­trol room at NMMC head­quar­ters at CBD Be­la­pur which func­tions through­out the year has been equipped fur­ther. Emer­gency con­trol room has been equipped with state-of-the-art fa­cil­i­ties and trained fire of­fi­cials have been de­ployed in fire sta­tions in Be­la­pur, Nerul, Vashi and Airoli each to re­spond to emer­gency calls,” said Mundhe.

Of­fi­cials will take nec­es­sary mea­sures to tackle nat­u­ral dis­as­ters like flood, land slide dur­ing mon­soon sea­son and co­or­di­nate with each other to min­imise the im­pact of such dis­as­ters.

Mundhe said, “The dig­ging of roads for lay­ing pipe­lines of var­i­ous util­i­ties has been stopped and re­pair and resur­fac­ing work on dam­aged roads have been com­pleted.”

Req­ui­site stock of medicines is be­ing main­tained in all civic hos­pi­tals to treat peo­ple in­fected with com­mu­ni­ca­ble diseases dur­ing rain. Thirty beds have been re­served for pa­tients who need ur­gent med­i­cal care at NMMC hos­pi­tal, Vashi.

The cen­tral quick re­sponse cen­tre at NMMC head­quar­ters in CBD Be­la­pur has been equipped with ul­tra­sonic ma­chine, ham ra­dio and hot­lines con­nected to 10 places in­clud­ing mantralaya, zilla par­ishad of­fi­cer and rail­ways for emer­gen­cies. It is also equipped with ad­vanced me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal equip­ment for rain fore­cast and to pro­vide other weather in­for­ma­tion.

Mundhe has in­structed of­fi­cials to en­sure gut­ters are cleaned at APMC mar­ket.

“I have asked of­fi­cials of pub­lic works de­part­ment to clean gut­ters from Vashi to Be­la­pur and make sure that street lights on the road are work­ing prop­erly,” he said.

The NMMC will soon pub­lish book­lets of its dis­as­ter man­age­ment plan which will have guide­lines to as­sist dis­as­ter re­lief work and emer­gency con­tact numbers.
