Water supply improves in most areas
Those who consume more than the allotted supply will be served notice asking them to restrict the usage
CBD BELAPUR: Around 30% of Navi Mumbai is receiving 24x7 water supply.
Saying this, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation said it had disconnected 3,225 illegal water connections in the city in the past one month.
Municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe had instructed his officials to ensure that the city gets 24x7 water as per the national per capitage average. The task had been given to city engineer Mohan Dagaonkar, who has undertaken several measures through the water supply department, to prevent wastage of water and ensure its maximum usage.
The department has intensified the clampdown on illegal water connections in the city. A whopping 3,225 illegal water connections have been disconnected within a month.
Dagaonkar said, “To ensure that the residents receive adequate water supply, the commissioner instructed the water supply department that it supply 24x7 water to the residents at 135 litres per day per person.”
He added, “Accordingly we have started distributing water 24x7 to several areas in the city in various nodes.”
Dagaonkar said that the commissioner had ordered that the water be used judiciously and legally.
Dagaonkar said, “Under the guidance of the commissioner, we are working to provide 24x7 water supply to other areas of the city as well. We will also intensify action against illegal water connections.”
The move will ensure adequate water supply to residents and the city’s water supply will improve.
“Those who consume more than the 135 litres per person per day (LPCD) will be served notice asking them to restrict the usage. If they fail to respond, a second notice will be served after two days. If they still continue to exceed the limit, their supply will be restricted with the help of special valves fitted to the supply line,” said Arvind Shinde, executive engineer, water supply department of NMMC.
In a bid to ensure that residents get water supply round the clock, the water supply department has also been taking a strict drive against illegal water connection since last one month across the municipal jurisdiction. Officials from the water supply department said that a total of 3225 such illegal connections have been snapped by the engineers during their audit.
