Small scale traders al­lege NMMC ha­rass­ment, de­cide not to pay tax

VASHI: The Small Scale En­trepreneurs As­so­ci­a­tion (SSEA) has al­leged ha­rass­ment by NMMC of­fi­cials and once again ques­tioned the ju­ris­dic­tion of the civic body over TTC MIDC area. It has de­cided not to pay taxes till a de­ci­sion is taken by the Supreme Court.

Trans Thane Creek (TTC) MIDC is one of the largest in­dus­trial belts in the state. There are around 4,000 SMEs in TTC MIDC pro­vid­ing over 500,000 di­rect jobs and an­other 500,000 in­di­rect jobs, thereby sup­port­ing al­most a mil­lion fam­i­lies, say in­dus­tri­al­ists.

The SSEA at a press con­fer­ence on Fri­day raised sev­eral is­sues against NMMC. It pre­sented case stud­ies of some of its mem­bers who have re­ceived no­tices for var­i­ous is­sues in­clud­ing prop­erty attachment.

KR Gopi, pres­i­dent of SSEA, said, “The is­sue is pend­ing in the Supreme court and yet NMMC con­tin­ues to is­sue no­tices. A to­tal of 700 in­dus­tri­al­ists have re­ceived no­tices.”

Gopi said, “We have de­cided that we will not give in to the de­mands and pay taxes till the Supreme Court or­der. We de­clare that NMMC has no ju­ris­dic­tion over us.”
