Small scale traders allege NMMC harassment, decide not to pay tax
VASHI: The Small Scale Entrepreneurs Association (SSEA) has alleged harassment by NMMC officials and once again questioned the jurisdiction of the civic body over TTC MIDC area. It has decided not to pay taxes till a decision is taken by the Supreme Court.
Trans Thane Creek (TTC) MIDC is one of the largest industrial belts in the state. There are around 4,000 SMEs in TTC MIDC providing over 500,000 direct jobs and another 500,000 indirect jobs, thereby supporting almost a million families, say industrialists.
The SSEA at a press conference on Friday raised several issues against NMMC. It presented case studies of some of its members who have received notices for various issues including property attachment.
KR Gopi, president of SSEA, said, “The issue is pending in the Supreme court and yet NMMC continues to issue notices. A total of 700 industrialists have received notices.”
Gopi said, “We have decided that we will not give in to the demands and pay taxes till the Supreme Court order. We declare that NMMC has no jurisdiction over us.”
