NMMC HEAT ON TAX DEFAULTERS, ATTACHES 485 BANK ACCOUNTS
CBD BELAPUR: The municipal corporation has initiated a crackdown on tax defaulters in the city.
In a special tax recovery drive against defaulters, 485 local body tax (LBT) defaulting businessmen and traders’ bank accounts have been attached. Besides, 1,371 property tax defaulters have been served legal notices to pay their dues within two days and previous arrears within a period of eight days.
Deputy municipal commissioner Umesh Wagh who is leading the drive said, “Local body tax and property tax are the two main sources of NMMC to provide civic amenities and services to residents and hence are very crucial for the city. The civic commissioner has ordered that all arrears be cleared at the earliest to help provide funds for the development of the city.”
The NMMC has collected an Rs213 crore in LBT arrears from April 1 to June 16. “This is a considerable increase of Rs114 crore compared to Rs99 crore collection during the same period last year,” said Wagh.
He said, “Rs126 crore-property tax has been recovered form April 1 to June 16. It is an increase of Rs 46 crore from last year’s Rs80 crore tax collected during the same period.”
Wagh said, “More such drives will be conducted against tax evaders in the coming days and legal action will be taken.”
