20-year-old driver arrested for killing roommate in Uran Gangs involved in 46 theft cases busted, stolen goods seized
The Uran police arrested a 20-year-old driver on Tuesday after he allegedly killed his roommate on Monday.
According to the police, the accused, Asish Rawat, and Vittiram Kol, 32, both from Madhya Pradesh, stayed in a rented house. They worked as drivers in different companies.
Rawat returned home drunk on Sunday and started assaulting Kol. When Kol resisted, Rawat punched him on his neck. Kol suffered severe internal injury. “Rawat strangled him to death,” said NG Majge, police inspector from Uran police station.
Majge said, “Rawat’s father died a few years ago in their village. Rawat believed that Kol had killed his father through black magic. He had decided to take revenge and was looking for a chance to commit the crime.”
“We believe he single handedly committed the crime and no one else was involved with him,” another police officer said.
The police have booked the accused under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code .
He has been remanded in police custody till June 30.
The Navi Mumbai crime branch has in two separate instances, arrested eight accused involved in at least 46 cases of house break-ins. The police have seized goods worth Rs39.56 lakh from them.
The accused of the first gang have been identified as Rajkumar Panchal, 34, Mehmood Ansari alias Pila Pappu, 46, Anil Kesharvani, 30, and Narsingh Chauhan, 25.
According to police commissioner Hemant Nagrale, “A trap was then laid and Rajkumar and Pappu were first arrested. After their interrogation, the other gang members were arrested.”
Nagrale said, “Investigations revealed that they were involved in 23 house break-ins. We have recovered Rs 19.88 lakh worth of stolen property from them. These include 71 tola of gold jewellery. They had mortgaged the jewellery to Muthoot and Manipuram Finance companies.”
The gang was involved in thefts in Kopar Khairane, Rabale, Nerul, Turbhe, Panvel and Uran. They also have cases registered against them at Bhiwandi, Bhiwandi city, Bhoiwada, Nimamapura, Naupada Goregaon, Ghatkopar, Mahim, Khar and Dindoshi police stations.
The arrested accused of the other gang have been identified as Kisan Vhankore, Sanchin Chankore and Mahadev Vhankore. “Kisan and Sachin are brothers are robbers. Their father Mahadev helped them dispose the stolen property,” said Nagrale.
The police have recovered Rs19.68 lakh worth of goods which includes 37.865 gms of gold jewellery, two-wheeler, camera and cash. Nagrale said they were wearing stolen jewellery. The rest of the jewellery had been mortgaged and was recovered. The police have solved 23 cases of thefts.
