Taloja jail in­mates plant 500 saplings, NMMC 20,000

A fash­ion de­sign­ing stu­dent paints an um­brella at a com­pe­ti­tion held at Sahyog Man­deer in Thane on Fri­day.

The in­mates of Taloja jail planted over 500 saplings in and round the jail on Fri­day.

Sev­eral dis­tin­guished peo­ple in­clud­ing Vi­jay Singh, prin­ci­pal sec­re­tary of home depart­ment (prison), MLA of Anushak­ti­na­gar, Tukaram Kate also par­tic­i­pated in the drive.

The jail au­thor­i­ties had re­ceived around 1,625 saplings from the for­est depart­ment and NGOs. How­ever, for ad­min­is­tra­tive is­sues, they man­aged to plant around 500 of them. They have de­cided to plant the rest of the sapling in the next few days.

“Only our se­nior most and trusted in­mates were al­lowed to take part in this drive. They did the job with great en­thu­si­asm. We will also take care of th­ese trees at least for next three years,” said one se­nior of­fi­cial from the jail.

This apart ev­ery po­lice sta­tion in Navi Mumbai also planted saplings in their ju­ris­dic­tion. Vashi po­lice along with NMMC and some NGOs planted over 750 saplings at sec­tor 12. Sim­i­lar drive was con­ducted at the po­lice com­mis­sioner’s of­fice at CBD Be­la­pur.

The rail­ways of­fi­cials also con­ducted sim­i­lar drives near Deputy mayor Av­inash Lad plants a sapling at Mini Seashore in Vashi on Fri­day.

The mem­bers of As­sam As­so­ci­a­tion in col­lab­o­ra­tion with Cidco planted around 2,000 saplings at Kharghar hills. Binod Mu­diar, pres­i­dent of the as­so­ci­a­tion, said, “Nearly 50 fam­i­lies liv­ing at Kharghar, Pan­vel and Be­la­pur came out and par­tic­i­pated in the drive.”

Navi Mumbai re­sponded over­whelm­ingly to the call by the state for­est min­istry to plant 2 crore trees in the state on July 1.

Spe­cial tree plan­ta­tion pro­grammes were or­gan­ised by NMMC, CIDCO and Raigad ad­min­is­tra­tion, apart from the po­lice with the ac­tive help of the res­i­dents.NMMC planted over 20,000 plants in Navi Mumbai on Fri­day.
