34 use ATM at Kalwa, lose cash to card fraud

Stu­dents of Mar Thoma Vidyapeeth, Tit­wala, par­tic­i­pate in the tree plan­ta­tion drive on Fri­day.

Around 34 res­i­dents from Thane and Navi Mum­bai lost money from their bank ac­counts with­out do­ing any trans­ac­tion. They re­al­ized the fraud af­ter they got mes­sages about the trans­ac­tion. They col­lec­tively lost Rs13.79 lakh.

They lodged a com­plaint with the Kalwa po­lice sta­tion on Fri­day. The com­plainants had with­drawn cash from an ATM of a pri­vate bank at Kalwa be­tween June 26 to June 30.

A po­lice in­spec­tor from Kalwa po­lice sta­tion said, “All com­plainants got a mes­sage on July 1 that cer­tain amount has been de­ducted from their ac­counts. Transactions were done from places such as Na­ri­man Point, Kalwa, Ul­has­na­gar, Kalyan, Dom­bivli and Vashi. The com­plainants used their card at the same ATM at Kalwa.”

A po­lice of­fi­cer from the cy­ber cell said that it was a case of card cloning as they found skim­mers which copy de­tails of debit card.

A case was lodged un­der sec­tions 379 of the IPC Code and IT Act of 66(c) and (d).
