30-year-old man arrested for killing wife at Panvel
A 30-year-old man from Shedung in Panvel who allegedly killed his wife by hitting her with an iron rod was arrested on Tuesday.
The police said Ramchandra Katkari and Nilima, 27, had tied the knot around three years ago and they lived in Katkarvadi village. The couple did not have smooth married life.
“Katkari would suspect that Nilima had an extra-marital affair with someone from the neighborhood and that led to frequent quarrels between them. He would also abuse and assault her following heated arguments. Nilima’s parents knew this, but they did not take any step assuming everything would be alright after a few months,” said a police officer from Panvel city police station.
Katkari did not stop assaulting his wife.
“On June 27, following a quarrel, he hit Nilima with an iron rod on her head. Even as Nilima suffered severe injuries in the attack, he took no efforts to admit her to a hospital. He took her to her mother’s place and then fled the spot within a few minutes,” the officer said.
Nilima succumbed to her injuries on Monday. Following an FIR registered by her family, the police arrested the accused on Tuesday.
The accused has been booked under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was produced before the judicial court on Tuesday and has been remanded in police custody for five days.
The police are investigating the case to find out if there were any other reasons behind the murder.
“It is not clear if the accused was drunk while committing the crime as we have arrested him a week after the incident. He does odd jobs to earn his livelihood. We have not found any criminal record of him,” another police officer said.
