A man cheated an 18-year-old boy of Rs1.64 lakh under the pretext of securing him first-year junior college admission in a Thane college.

The accused has been identified as Nikhil More. The police have still not traced him.

More, a resident of Khartan Road near Thane station, was the boy’s neighbour. After the SSC results were declared in June, More told the boy to pay him Rs 2lakh in exchange for a seat in a Thane college by the first week of July.

“The boy was carried away by More’s promise, as it sounded convincing. More met and convinced the boy’s family too. The family paid him Rs1.64 lakh,” said a police constable from the Thane Nagar police station.

After getting the money, More did not respond to the boy’s calls and messages. He left for his native place a week ago.

“More told the boy he had contacts in all Thane colleges. We went to More’s house but he was not there. He has been absconding. We have charged him under section 420 of the Indian penal code,” said the police.
