Po­lice con­sta­ble dies in road ac­ci­dent, one held

A po­lice con­sta­ble at­tached with Taloja po­lice sta­tion died af­ter the bike he was rid­ing was hit by a four-wheeler at Kharghar on Fri­day.

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, Ku­nal Son­awne, 31, lived at the po­lice colony in CBD Be­la­pur.

Around 6.45pm, he was trav­el­ling from sec­tor 23 to sec­tor 12 in Kharghar for some work.

“As he was cross­ing the Bank of In­dia Chowk at sec­tor 7, a four-wheeler which was go­ing to­wards Ut­sav Chowk from the Sion-Pan­vel high­way, hit his bike,” said Swap­nil Wagh­mare, po­lice sub-in­spec­tor from Kharghar po­lice sta­tion.

Son­awne fell down in the ac­ci­dent and he suf­fered se­vere in­juries at var­i­ous parts of his body. He was rushed to a nearby hospi­tal by some lo­cal peo­ple, but the doc­tors de­clared him dead there.

There were two peo­ple in the four-wheeler when the ac­ci­dent took place.

The man who was at wheel has been iden­ti­fied as H Ya­dav, The mo­tor­cy­cle which the con­sta­ble Ku­nal Son­awne (in­set) was rid­ing.

“Ya­dav had jumped the sig­nal be­fore hit­ting the vic­tim’s bike. We have ar­rested him from the spot,” he said.

The po­lice have booked the ac­cused un­der sec­tions 279 and 304a of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC) and sec­tion 184 of the Mo­tor Ve­hi­cle Act.

The po­lice sent the de­ceased’s body to Pan­vel ru­ral hospi­tal for con­duct­ing post­mortem and then de­liv­ered it to his fam­ily. The post­mortem re­ports are yet to come.

“The ac­cused was not drunk when the ac­ci­dent took place. It is a case of rash driv­ing,” Wagh­mare said.
