Corporator cheated of `81 lakh, one held
The Kopar Khairane police have arrested one man for allegedly cheating a corporator of Rs81 lakh by taking money to buy a shop.
Three of his accomplices are still on the run and the police are now searching for them.
According to the police the accused had told the corporator Shankar More, that he and his friends have found a shop in the area at a cheaper rate.
They had also reportedly applied for a loan and that was not being sanctioned for some reason.
“The accused and his accomplices asked for help for purchasing the shop. They said that if they did not pay some amount soon, some other people would buy it,” said a police officer.
More said, “They were just like our activists and we knew them for the past few years. They said that the original price of the shop was around Rs2 crore, but they were getting at a cheaper rate. So when they came to us and asked for some money, some of us contributed Rs5 to Rs6 lakh each and we collectively gave them the amount to purchase the shop. However, once they got the money in their hands, they ran away. We then registered an FIR with the police.”
More said the accused also showed them documents of loan application and hence they did not suspect their intention.
The police, however, have not revealed the name of the arrested accused as it might hamper their investigations.
They have also not revealed that they have been able to recover the amount from the accused.
“We are now looking for the other three accused and hope to arrest them very soon,” a senior police officer said.
