Two con­sta­bles ar­rested for tak­ing bribe

Two po­lice con­sta­bles posted at Thane com­mis­sion­er­ate (Bhi­wandi con­trol room) were ar­rested on Wed­nes­day for ac­cept­ing Rs5,000 bribe.

They took money from a sand sup­plier on Tues­day, say­ing they would re­frain from in­ves­ti­gat­ing and in­ter­fer­ing in the case of sand mafia.

The 35-year-old sand sup­plier from Bhi­wandi com­plained to ACB of­fi­cers af­ter he was asked for bribe. On Tues­day, the two con­sta­bles were ar­rested from Bhi­wandi while they were ac­cept­ing Rs5,000.

Ac­cord­ing to the com­plainant, the two con­sta­bles on many oc­ca­sions in the past had in­ter­cepted his trucks sup­ply­ing sand and use to threaten driv­ers ask­ing to shell out money or else they will take ac­tion against him on charges of il­le­gally trans­port­ing sand.

A po­lice in­spec­tor from ACB, Thane, said, “We ar­rested them from Bhi­wandi area. The ac­cused con­sta­bles will be pro­duced in court to­mor­row. We have reg­is­tered a case too in the Bhi­wandi po­lice sta­tion un­der rel­e­vant sec­tions. We also came to know that the con­sta­bles had asked for Rs10,000. Af­ter ne­go­ti­a­tion, they set­tled at Rs5,000.”
