MLA makes surprise visit to Vashi’s ETC, demands probe
MLA Manda Mhatre, who recently opposed construction of two new Education, Training and Service Centre (ETC) for PWDs, schools by NMMC for special children in the city, made a surprise visit to the ETC school in Vashi on Thursday.
She has demanded a thorough probe into the functioning of the centre claiming irregularities. Mhatre stated that if municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe does not conduct the probe, she will get it done through other sources.
Speaking after her visit, Mhatre said, “NMMC spends 3% of its budget on ETC. Despite this, I found the number of students benefitting from the centre very low. The officials claimed that 300 students are registered, but I found the classes empty.”
She added, “NMMC has been taking demolition action against structures that have not got OC. ETC still does not have an OC, why has the commissioner allowed it to function? If it doesn’t have OC, then it is not safe to use.”
Mhatre said, “Some rooms had stocks of private orgnisations kept without official sanction.”
She added, “I also found lots of uniforms, bags, raincoats lying in a room. Why have they not been given to the students and if they were given, why was no one wearing them?”
Targetting, ETC director Varsha Bhagat, she said, “She was not present today. There are lots of issues with the teachers appointed as well with some permanent teachers being sacked and others taken on contract.”
Mhatre said, “There is a need for a thorough probe and I will ask the municipal commissioner to conduct it. Public money is being used at the centre and hence there is a need for clarity on it.”
