The new 2-km pipeline between Khandeshwar temple and Kamothe will supply and distribute water.

Maharashtra Jal Pradhikaran (MJP) has agreed to provide City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) with 2.5 mld water to distribute in Kamothe.

The town planning agency has also laid new pipeline in an area of 2 km between Khandeshwar temple and Kamothe for receiving and distributing water.

Kamothe gets water from the Morbe dam of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). However, the population of the node has increased manifold in the past few years and the need for more water is being felt there.

Before the onset of the monsoon, the area has seen severe water crisis across all sectors. Residents would get water for half-an-hour and they had to be dependent on tanker water.

A group of local residents recently met the Cidco officials at their Belapur office and asked for more water for the area. The officials assured them that they would ask for more water from NMMC.

“We have completed laying of 2 kms of water pipeline between Khandeshwar and Kamothe. As immediate relief we will take 2.5 mld water from MJP through this new pipeline. We will think about other sources of water including NMMC’s Morbe dam if we still have water deficit in Kamothe,” a Cidco official said.

He said Cidco has written to NMMC civic chief asking for 10 mld water for Kamothe. However, they have not received any reply so far. They are also in touch with Panvel Municipal Council to get some water for the node.

Kamothe requires around 36 mld water to meet its requirements. However, the node has not got adequate water for the last few months.

There was pathetic condition of water supply during summer when residents had to buy water from tankers.

“Every monsoon, we get lots of promises from Cidco about sufficient water supply next summer. But when summer comes, we find ourselves in the same water crisis. We hope they will do something concrete this time,” said Mandeep Kaur, 36, a resident of sector 35.
