- Toufiq Rashid letters@hindustantimes.com

An elderly couple was injured when security forces opened fire during a midnight raid on their residence in south Kashmir’s Tral region, and a seven-year-old boy was critically injured in a separate incident of pellet firing in downtown Srinagar. Eyewitnesses say a joint party of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF fired on the couple when they tried to resist their son’s arrest in Tral’s Kamla Bachoo village.

The son — Shabir Ahmad Fallahi — is the district chief of the hardline Jamat-e-Islami organisation. The couple — Abdul Qayoom, 80, and his wife Nazira Begam, 75, — is admitted at the SMHS hospital in Srinagar. Qayoom has undergone a surgery for a pellet injury and his wife has a bullet wound on her shoulder.
