RTO, cops propose odd-even rule for parking in Dombivli

To decongest Dombivli’s infamous traffic, both the traffic police and Regional Transport Office (RTO) have proposed measures like odd-even parking, following lane order and separate queues for metered autorickshaws.

A fresh draft has also been made that will be discussed with the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) as a smart city plan.

If approved, it will be implemented phase-wise. “Dombivli station premises as well as other areas have multiple traffic issues, including, absence of traffic signals, narrow lanes, haphazard parking and encroachment. Keeping all these in view, we have prepared a rough draft plan to help city residents,” said traffic ACP Ravindra Wadekar.

This is not the first time when RTO and traffic cops have taken an initiative to solve traffic woes. Last year, both departments talked to residents’ association of Kalyan and Dombivli about changes on busy roads. The purpose was achieved in Kalyan to some extent as lane order and parking rules were followed. However, Dombivli witnessed no improvement.

Wadekar added, “As the city lacks planning, traffic problems are bound to happen. Our officials keep a tab on traffic violators, auto drivers refusing to take commuters and not following rules but everything goes haywire during peak hours. This is because of absence of parking zones. We have requested the corporation to build parking plaza and proposal is under consideration.”

They are running a pilot for the odd-even parking. “We have initiated the odd-even parking (parking the vehicles on either side on alternate day, keeping one side free) nearby station, on trial basis since a week and are getting good response,” the ACP said.
