25K to participate in Thane marathon
More than 25,000 people will participate in the 27th Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon on Sunday.
The marathon will start at 6.30am from the Thane Municipal Corporation headquarters Panchpakhadi. The marathon this year will be run to promote a clean and healthy neighbourhood.
Athlete Lalita Babar and rower Dattu Bhokanal, who participated in the Rio Olympics, will be present for the marathon to encourage the participants.
Athletes, participating in the 21 km and 15 km run for male and female category, will get chips to keep track of time. This will ensure transparency in the marathon results.
Around 350 men and 70 women athlete from across the country will participate in the 21 and 15 kilometre run.
The Varsha Marathon is the only monsoon marathon held on a large scale across the country claims the corporation. The marathon for the last 26 years was conducted in Thane city only. This year the corporation has initiated a new route of 10 kilometre from Kharegaon to TMC headquarters.
The run will be supervised by 200 referees, 80 pilots, 225 security guards and hundreds of volunteers.
Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer for TMC, said, “We have also arranged free medical check-up of runners, emergency booths along the route, ambulance facility and primary health care centres along the entire route.”
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will be present for the prize distribution ceremony.
Well-known Marathi actors from Kanha and YZ movies will also participate in the marathon to encourage the contestants.
