Pan­vel Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion will be formed on Oc­to­ber 1

A gov­ern­ment res­o­lu­tion declar­ing Pan­vel Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion (PMC) was is­sued on Fri­day after the gov­er­nor gave his con­sent to the for­ma­tion of the body.

As per the GR, the mu­nic­i­pal cor­po­ra­tion will come into ex­is­tence from Oc­to­ber 1.

The GR was is­sued by state gov­ern­ment deputy sec­re­tary Sud­hakar Shinde.

The PMC that has been formed on the ba­sis of 2011 cen­sus will com­prise 32 vil­lages apart from Pan­vel city area and have a pop­u­la­tion of 5,09,901.

The an­nounce­ment has led to dis­cus­sion among the po­lit­i­cal cir­cles and res­i­dents on the changes that will now take place in the re­gion.

Atul Jait­pal, a Pan­vel res­i­dent, said: “It is good that the cor­po­ra­tion is finally coming into ex­is­tence. It how­ever re­mains to be seen what dif­fer­ence it will make to Pan­vel area.”

He added, “De­spite be­ing lo­cated next to Navi Mumbai, de­vel­op­ment has lagged here. Hope­fully with larger area and more funds, things will im­prove. There is a lot of ex­cite­ment and one is pray­ing that our hopes are not dashed.”

The United Kharghar Ac­tion com­mit­tee has stated that it will con­tinue to fight to ex­clude Kharghar from PMC ju­ris­dic­tion. It has filed a PIL in the high court de­mand­ing an in­de­pen­dent cor­po­ra­tion for Kharghar.

The Taloja Man­u­fac­tures As­so­ci­a­tion too has been op­pos­ing in­clu­sion in the proposed PMC want­ing to re­main un­der MIDC ju­ris­dic­tion. The plan­ning of the proposed PMC has been done as per the cen­sus of 2011.
