Food makes up 73% of city’s garbage: BMC WHAT’S IN YOUR WASTE, MUMBAI? 4% 3 Thane cops raid 4 more call centres, seize hard disks
Three-fourths of the garbage Mumbai generated in the past year was made up of the food we waste.
An unreleased environment report by the civic body for 2015-16 shows 73% of garbage that made its way into dumping grounds was food waste. What makes this a hazard? Only 5% of the waste is segregated, according to the report — which means the rest of it chokes dumping grounds that have been witnessing recurring fires. “Three-fourths of the city’s total waste has been demarcated as organic wet waste. When this mixes with other forms of dry waste such as plastic, debris and cloth, the process of decomposition % takes much longer and as a result, the suppressed methane generated at dumping grounds ignites fires,” said a senior civic official from the solid waste management (SWM) department.
Four more call centres in Mira Road were raided on Saturday, following leads from the employees arrested in the tele fraud case busted earlier this week.
Investigators probing the scam — in which several call centres in the area got employees to pose as revenue officials and bully US loan defaulters into making payments — found on questioning the arrested employees that these four centres were using a similar operation.
The centres, however, had shut shop after Tuesday’s raid, officials said.
