As people rushed to railway stations to book outstation tickets in bulk, in a bid to exchange old Rs500 and Rs1,000 banknotes, railways devised ways to ensure there is no misuse.

The ministry revised its refund procedure for tickets booked over the counter from November 9 to 11 — refund for cancellations above Rs10,000, booked during these three days, will be done through cheque or electronic clearing service (ECS), a ministry circular issued said. Meanwhile, the city’s traffic police have decided to stop collecting fines in cash. “We will go completely cashless by the end of this month. No constable will collect cash (fine) anywhere in the city,” JCP (traffic) Milind Bharambe told HT. Offenders will be given an array of electronic payment gateways on the spot.

Also, to avoid spats with the public over scrapped notes, the association of petrol pump dealers will keep all pumps shut for seven hours after Friday midnight.
