Kalyan youth will not be charged by NIA for joining ISIS
Areeb Majeed, the only Indian to return after joining the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, will not be charged for being a member of a terrorist organisation, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court said on Wednesday. He along with three others had gone to Iraq to join the terror group in May 2014.
The move could set precedent for how ISIS recruits who come back to India are tried. The court dropped section 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, over a technicality that when Areeb allegedly joined the ISIS, the organisation had not been declared a terrorist outfit under Indian Law. The court upheld other charges under UAPA and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
