KALYAN: In preparation for the chief minister’s Devendra Fadnavis visit to Kalyan, a team of policemen were deployed at Adharwadi dumping ground.

This was to make sure there was no repeat of the fires which broke out at the dump yard in the last fortnight.

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) did not want any such incident during the chief minister’s visit. Two-day Smart City Summit started on Friday at the Kalyan Sports Complex, which is near the dump yard. A team of 58 policemen has been monitoring the dump yard since Thursday and will continue till Saturday.

“Usually, fire officials keep a watch on the dump yard. But, we did not want to take a chance as the chief minister was coming for the function,” said Sudhakar Kulkarni, fire officer, KDMC.

The residents are angry over the extra measures. “For many days, thousands of residents have been living in danger but there was no police security. Now there is, only because of the CM,” said Madhukar Patil, 53.

The old dump yard has caught fire three times in the past fortnight, leaving the air filled with smoke. “With so many people attending the event, whose venue is near the dump yard, we do not want another incident of fire,” said a senior KDMC official.
