The newly weds Amol Jaiswal, 30, and his wife had gone to Jaiswal’s parents’ home which is upstairs in the same building.

When they returned after half an hour, they found the house broken into.

“When they went in, they saw that the cupboard door had been broken and jewellery stolen. We asked the neighbours who told us that they heard someone banging the door but they ignored it as they thought someone was shutting the door,” said N Deshmukh, police inspector from Manpada police station.

The police are taking statement of the neighbours and are going through CCTV footages of the shops to trace the accused.

The police suspect that the culprits are people known to the couple. Jaiswal works in a private company in Thane.

Deshmukh said, “The accused committed the crime in half an hour. The building does not have a CCTV camera.”
