THANE: The hawkers in Thane are up in arms against the Thane Municipal Corporation for razing their stalls. The hawkers from the Samanvay Hawkers committee has demanded that the corporation first set up the hawker’s policy and then raze the hawkers.

The TMC has undertaken massive road widening project in the city for which many hawkers from areas like Thane station, Subhash Road and Jambali Naka were razed in the last few months.

The hawkers staged a protest near the TMC headquarters.

Deepak Ghanshani, the president of the committee said, “The government had passed the hawkers policy wherein the hawkers will get identity cards and can conduct their business in dedicated hawker’s zone. However, the corporation has not implemented this policy and have began razing hawkers’ stalls.”

A civic officer said, “The hawkers have illegally occupied the roads and footpaths and so we had to remove their stalls.”
