Axis Bank branch raided over fake ac­counts in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Income tax of­fi­cials raided an Axis Bank branch in Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, be­gin­ning Thurs­day evening and said on Friday the op­er­a­tion un­earthed more than 40 fake ac­counts in which large sums were de­posited in old notes after Novem­ber 8.

TV re­ports said about Rs100 crore was found in du­bi­ous ac­counts at the branch but tax of­fi­cials said the in­ves­ti­ga­tion was on and fi­nal fig­ures would emerge later.

Shop­keep­ers in the vicin­ity said three peo­ple wear­ing suits en­tered the bank around 4pm on Thurs­day and the shut­ters were put down, to be opened tem­po­rar­ily later to al­low fe­male em­ploy­ees to leave. Other bank staff and the tax of­fi­cials stayed overnight, ex­am­in­ing records and CCTV footage.
