Get driver’s licence online from next yr
MUMBAI: No more tedious paperwork, no more getting fleeced by touts, as the state is all set to take the process of getting a driver’s licence online.
By the end of February 2017, the motor vehicles department is looking to migrate to webbased systems VAHAN 4.0 and SARATHI 4.0 that will allow citizens to apply for a licence, book a date for the test and even make the payment online.
The systems will also be used to register vehicles and transfer them, at all 50 RTOs in the state.
Developed by the National Infor matics Center (NIC), VAHAN and SARATHI have been used for vehicle registration and issuing driving licences since 2007.
Two RTO offices in Mumbai — Tardeo and Wadala —migrated to an upgraded version of VAHAN this week after a monthlong trial of the system at the Vashi and Aurangbad RTOs.
Following trials of the new version of SARATHI at Kolhapur, the transport department said it is ready to implement it at other RTOs in the state.
Sources said it will first be installed at Wadala and Panvel.
