MUM­BAI: A phys­i­cal re­la­tion­ship cou­pled­with‘sin­dur’and‘man­gal­su­tra’ does not make a valid mar­riage.TheBom­bay­high­cour­theld the act of a man — in a phys­i­cal re­la­tion­ship with a woman — of ap­ply­ing ‘sin­dur’ on her fore­head and ty­ing a ‘man­gal­su­tra’ around her neck in front of an idol can­not be re­garded as per­for­mance of a valid­mar­riage,asen­vis­age­dun­der Hindu Mar­riage Act, 1955.

The court was hear­ing an ap­peal filed by a 40-year-old Nag­pur busi­ness­man chal­leng­ing the va­lid­ity of an 2015 fam­ily court or­der that al­lowed a plea for resti­tu­tion of con­ju­gal rights of a woman, 38, claim­ing­to­be­hiswife.
