Untreated waste to pile up at Deonar for 4 more years
More than a year after a massive fire engulfed parts of the city’s largest dumping ground, the BMC’S plan to set up a treatment plant at the site is still stuck in the initial stages.
Sources said the firms bidding to build the plant are demanding at least four years to set it up. The reason: the BMC’S conditions put the onus on them to not only get green clearances, but to also clear waste on the 12-hectare plot on which the plant will be built.
The January 2016 fire was so severe, it forced schools and offices to shut down and led to health problems for the area’s residents for months afterwards.
