Hindustan Times ST (Mumbai) - - FRONT PAGE - Arvind Walmiki

The family of a 26-yearold woman asked the Bhiwandi police to lodge a complaint against her fiancé on Friday after he allegedly demanded Rs1 lakh as dowry and called off the marriage after she refused to pay.

Police said the couple got engaged a month ago and were to be married on April 30.

The woman’s family said the fiancé , Imran Shaikh, 28, works at a private firm. “Shaikh is a divorcee. He told the woman’s family that his ex-wife had asked him to pay Rs5 lakh and asked them to give him Rs1 lakh,” said an officer.

“When the woman’s family said they could not arrange for the money at such short notice, Shaikh called off the wedding. The woman’s family had paid the bill for the invitation cards, the marriage hall and other expenses. The woman’s father planned to get his second daughter married in the same hall,” he added.

Police have booked Shaikh, but have not yet arrested him. They have sent him a notice, asking him to come to the police station and record a statement.
