Leopard rescued from Marol
MUMBAI: Hours after the forest department set up a rescue cage at Marol, Andheri (East), following reports that a leopard had been spotted in the locality, the animal was trapped in the early hours of Thursday. “Around 3am, the leopard walked into the cage that was set up in an abandoned industrial unit on Military Road. We had left chickens as bait,” said Jitendra Ramgaokar, deputy conservator of forest, Thane forest range, who led the operation along with 25 other forest officers and staff from Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).
Dr Shailesh Pethe, veterinarian, SGNP, said the leopard has been kept in isolation and will undergo several medical tests.
Forest officials said locals had spotted the leopard at Halimabai Chawl near Marol Nand Dham Udhyog society on Sunday and called them to rescue the leopard.
Residents welcomed the efforts made by forest department to trap the leopard, but said it just shows how important it is to protect Aarey Colony from development.
A chicken was used as bait to lure the leopard.
