Trump Foundation sued by New York attorney gen VIOLATING CAMPAIGN LAWS
WASHINGTON:THE US state of New York sued President Donald Trump, three of his children and the Trump Foundation on Thursday, alleging that the namesake charity has violated campaign laws.
The lawsuit by New York attorney general Barbara Underwood also alleged that the charity was used to pay Trump’s legal fees and promote his businesses. The suit sought $2.8 billion in restitution and called for the foundation to be dissolved.
“As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a chequebook for payments from Mr Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality,” Underwood said in a statement.
Trump slammed the suit in a tweet, calling it the handiwork of “sleazy” Democrats.
Along with Trump, the suit names his children Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump, who sit on its board. It says that all four should be barred from serving on any board of a charity in New York.
The suit alleges that the foundation raised $2.8 million in was aimed influencing the outcome of the 2016 elections. Payments were made from it to groups in Iowa state just before the primaries . The foundation also paid to settle disputes against Trump business such as the Trump National Golf Club and Mar-alago.
