Bus runs over man, protesters block traffic on Goa highway
NAVIMUMBAI: Around 100 locals of Kalle village near Panvel blocked the Mumbai-goa highway for an hour after a state-run Shivshahi bus ran over a 55-year-old man from the village on Saturday.
According to police, Lahu Ambu Darwada was crossing the road around 9.15am, when a bus coming from Alibaug and going towards Panvel hit him. “Darwada was severely injured. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but declared brought dead,” said a police officer from Panvel Taluka police station. The locals blocked the entire road and demanded action against the bus driver. “We reached the spot and arrested the bus driver, Pradeep Romade, 54.We have booked him under sections 304a, 279 of the IPC and section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act,” the officer said.
Ashok Dudhe, deputy commissioner of police (zone II), said, “We convinced people to clear the road. We have registered a separate case against them for creating problems.”
The protest led to traffic jams on both sides of the road.
