Man in coma after jumping off train to nab mobile thief
38yearold suffered head injuries when he fell on platform
NAVI MUMBAI: A 38-year-old businessman from Kamothe fell into a coma after suffering severe head injuries at Belapur railway station while chasing a mobile phone thief.
The incident took place in the early hours of November 2 when Sachindra Singh was returning home on a train from Wadala at around 1.30am. He was chatting on his phone while standing in the passage near the door.
“At Sanpada station, an unidentified person entered the compartment and stood near Singh. As the train started moving out of Belapur station, the accused snatched Singh’s phone and jumped onto the platform,” said
Rajesh Babshetty, police inspector, Panvel Government Railway Police (GRP).
“To nab the thief, Singh also jumped off. However, the train had picked up speed by then. He
almost fell into the gap between the train and the platform,” Babshetty said. The on-duty GRP officer pulled Singh out of the gap but he suffered severe injuries to his head. He was rushed to a hospital and went into a coma there.
“Taking suo moto evidence of the CCTV footage, we registered a complaint against the culprit on Wednesday and are searching for him,” Babshetty said.
