Man in coma af­ter jump­ing off train to nab mo­bile thief

38­year­old suf­fered head in­juries when he fell on plat­form

NAVI MUM­BAI: A 38-year-old busi­ness­man from Kamothe fell into a coma af­ter suf­fer­ing se­vere head in­juries at Be­la­pur rail­way sta­tion while chas­ing a mo­bile phone thief.

The in­ci­dent took place in the early hours of November 2 when Sachin­dra Singh was re­turn­ing home on a train from Wadala at around 1.30am. He was chat­ting on his phone while stand­ing in the pas­sage near the door.

“At San­pada sta­tion, an uniden­ti­fied per­son en­tered the com­part­ment and stood near Singh. As the train started mov­ing out of Be­la­pur sta­tion, the ac­cused snatched Singh’s phone and jumped onto the plat­form,” said

Ra­jesh Bab­shetty, po­lice in­spec­tor, Pan­vel Govern­ment Rail­way Po­lice (GRP).

“To nab the thief, Singh also jumped off. How­ever, the train had picked up speed by then. He

al­most fell into the gap be­tween the train and the plat­form,” Bab­shetty said. The on-duty GRP of­fi­cer pulled Singh out of the gap but he suf­fered se­vere in­juries to his head. He was rushed to a hospi­tal and went into a coma there.

“Taking suo moto ev­i­dence of the CCTV footage, we reg­is­tered a com­plaint against the culprit on Wed­nes­day and are search­ing for him,” Bab­shetty said.

Sachin­dra Singh got in­jured while chas­ing the thief at Be­la­pur sta­tion.
