Filled with in­ter­est­ing char­ac­ters, this book main­tains its page-turn­ing mo­men­tum till the very end. The taut sto­ry­line sags a lit­tle only oc­ca­sion­ally when a rather in­sipid ro­mance is given too many para­graphs. How­ever, as we see closer to the end, those para­graphs are some­what jus­ti­fied by the events lead­ing to the cli­max. The chief char­ac­ters in the story are teenagers, who have to free a pris­oner from an im­pen­e­tra­ble fortress and stop the sup­ply of ju­rda parem, an ad­dic­tive sub­stance that could com­pletely change the way the world func­tions. Leigh Bar­dugo has cre­ated a fan­tasy world to ri­val the best — her Gr­isha se­ries about peo­ple with spe­cial pow­ers over the build­ing blocks of life is worth a read af­ter this book.
