In a first in the country, 36 women from North East, have joined the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team in the Capital. Until now, 200 men comprised the specially-trained SWAT team, which is dedicated to antiterror operations and tackling hardened criminals. The team is equipped with the latest weapons and security apparatus. The batch of 36 women underwent the same training as men, informs Shiv Kumar, a trainer. He says, “They are trained in all kinds of self-defense techniques: Judo, Karate, all kinds of locks in case of an attack with a weapon, such as a knife. They are no less than an NSD commando. The training lasted for about 12-13 months.”

We spoke to a few courageous and determined members of the SWAT team on what inspired and challenged them to join the force.
