‘Traffic messes up our lives’

HT Estates - - HTESTATES -

Ihave been living here with my family for nearly 48 years now. We have grown up seeing the growth of traffic in this area. A lot has changed with time in Daryaganj. The area, in the heart of Old and New Delhi, used to once be lush green. However, with the growth of commercialisation, it has become too congested. Now we have very few parks and playgrounds for children and senior citizens.

There has been a steady increase in the number of shops, offices and vehicles. In spite of living in the heart of the city, one is distanced from other parts of Delhi primarily due to the traffic jams here all through the day. Most houses here do not have parking of their own. Traffic jam is at its worse at 2 pm as two big schools close at that time. Parking is a major concern here as people who don’t live here also come and park their cars on our roads. During rallies in Ramlila Maidan, there’s such a rush of cars and people that we do not even have space to walk. In case the residents here need to drive to the hospital for an emergency, even taking out a car on the road is next to impossible as the roads are all jam packed.

The property prices have gone up quickly due to steady commercialisation and more and more residents are selling off their properties to private builders at good prices.

However, parking here on roads should be banned completely to ensure a better life for residents who have decided to continue living here. Feroz Shah Kotla or Rajgarh area should be used for parking, thus decongesting the lanes here to allow people to use their vehicles during emergencies.
