27 cities in­cluded in the third list: The third list of Smart Cities Mis­sion in­cludes 27 cities, which are spread across 12 states. These in­clude Am­rit­sar, Agra, Kan­pur, Thane, Ajmer, Varanasi, Nag­pur and Tiru­pati. With this the Cen­tral govern­ment has in­cluded 60 cities for fund­ing un­der the mis­sion To­tal in­vest­ments: The new cities are from 12 states and have pro­posed to in­vest a to­tal of ₹ 66,883 crore un­der their re­spec­tive smart city plans. The amount in­cludes ₹ 42,524 crore in area-based de­vel­op­ment and ₹ 11,379 crore in tech­nol­ogy-based pan city so­lu­tions The pro­ce­dure: Smart cities will be cre­ated by de­vel­op­ing a small area, ei­ther by retrofitting, re­de­vel­op­ment or de­vel­op­ment of en­tirely new ar­eas (green field) – col­lec­tively re­ferred to as com­pact area de­vel­op­ment, and some ini­tia­tives in im­prov­ing ser­vices on a city wide ba­sis Who is pay­ing? Money (about 56%) is be­ing pro­vided by Cen­tral and state gov­ern­ments us­ing both the Smart City Mis­sion funds as well as con­verged funds from other Cen­tral sec­tor schemes. Pri­vate sec­tor in­vest­ment is only 22%, while debt fund­ing is 12% Chal­lenges ahead: With 60 cities across In­dia el­i­gi­ble for fund­ing sup­port from the govern­ment, the big­gest chal­lenge will be ta­lent and ex­per­tise.
