Rubber unit’s stink spreads gloom
KOHARA, LUDHIANA: Located at Mehlon village, near Kohara, Kartar Rubber Company has become a bane for the residents of four villages, who have been complaining about the foul smell of burning rubber emanating from the unit.
When asked, Deepak, manager of Kartar Rubber Company, said, “Our company is not burning rubber and the claims made by the villagers are false. We do not melt rubber and our company is equipped with high-tech instruments so there is no ques- tion of air pollution.”
“Even officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board had visited our company but found nothing wrong. The villagers are making false claims to tarnish the image of the company. They had demanded donation to organise a sports event but when it was refused, they started raising this issue of air pollution,” the manager said.
However, Ravinder Bhatti, SDO of Punjab Pollution Control Board, who is in-charge of the area, told HT, “The nearby villages had filed a complaint a month ago and the case is up for hearing. The company’s argu- ment that PPCB did not find anything wrong in the firm is false.
The case is pending for the next hearing with the PPCB authorities. After the final hearing, appropriate action would be taken by higher officials of PPCB in this regard.”
Nirmal Singh ( 60) of Paharuwal village said, “ We have frequently complained about the foul smell to the head of our village. He has also taken up the matter at a higher level but nothing has been done so far. We want the authorities to intervene and take stern action against the company.”
