100-yr- old bridge to be taken apart
LUDHIANA: Considering the increasing vehicular traffic on Jagraon bridge, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has asked the railway officials to dismantle the 100-year-old iron bridge on it.
LMC officials have asked the railways to provide them with information on the timeframe for dismantling the iron bridge.
Doing away with the 100year-old bridge will widen the Jagraon bridge and ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Social activist Rahul Verma had submitted a proposal in this regard eight months ago to then additional commissioner KP Brar.
Brar had then visited the site ascertain whether it was feasible to dismantle the bridge and if the move would solve the perennial problem of traffic congestion on the bridge.
After discussing the matter with technical experts from B& R department, Brar concluded that the iron bridge could be dismantled within 10 days. Since it was not possible to remove a part of it, a proposal to dismantle the entire bridge was formulated.
In May, Brar wrote to Vishlesh Choube, divisional railway manager, Ferozepur division, but no notice was taken of the letter.
Following this, Verma took up the matter railway authorities. He took technical officials from the Ludhiana rail- way station to the site, following which they agreed to the idea of removing the bridge.
On September 14, officiating MC commissioner MS Jaggi sent a reminder to DRM Choube and a response is awaited.
Verma said dismantling the iron bridge would provide an additional 15-foot space for vehicular movement.
“I have no personal interest in getting this bridge dismantled. All city residents will benefit from this move. MC officials have always been supportive of the idea and the project was delayed due to the initial lack of interest shown by the railway authorities,” the social activist added.
He added that the railway authorities were sitting on the proposal for months.
Meanwhile, Choube said he had not received any letter in this regard. “If the state government is ready to bear the expense of the project, we are ready to dismantle the bridge. Lakhs of rupees would be spent on it and railway traffic will also be hit,” he added.
