92-yr-old accused of attacking tenant
Residents up in arms; police book eight persons on charge of assault
LUDHIANA: People of Jagraon, along with senior Akali-BJP leaders, thronged the SSP’s office on Thursday to lodge their protest against registration of a criminal case against eight persons supporting a 92-yearold woman.
The protesters alleged that the police had registered a false case on Surinder Singh’s complaint at the city police station on Wednesday night accusing 92-year-old Maya Devi of hatching a conspiracy to attack him.
Surinder Singh, a tenant of Maya Devi, has been staying at her house for the last five years.
Though the police did not name the woman in the FIR but it booked eight persons, including three women, who take care of her, as she stays alone. The police told the complainant that they would inquire into Maya Devi’s role in the attack and if found guilty, she too would be booked.
Surinder Singh, in his statement to the police, had alleged that he was beaten up by Maya Devi’s friends at Kamal Chowk, Jagraon, at her behest.
On hearing about the case on Thursday, people of the area got agitated. They expressed anguish as the complainant had accused a 92-year-old woman, who could not even walk without help.
District planning committee, Ludhiana, chairman Bhag Singh Malla, Jagraon municipal council president Krishan Dheer, along with other Akail-BJP leaders and residents of the area met Jagraon SSP Amar Singh Chahal and conveyed that the case was totally false.
The SSP, after listening to them, marked an inquiry into the case.
Local Akali councillor Darshan Singh accused the tenant of wanting to grab Maya Devi’s house, which was why he wanted to involve the woman and her friends in a false case. He said that the tenant had not been paying rent for the last three years and had threatened Maya Devi to implicate her in false cases. The councillor said that Maya Devi had also complained against him at the city police station a month ago but inquiry officer Balwant Singh had not taken any action.
