FARM LABOURER KIDNAPPED, BEATEN UP

LUDHIANA: A farm labourer was kidnapped from his house at Malla vil­lage in Ja­graon on Sun­day al­legedly by men hired by a liquor con­trac­tor of the area.

He was beaten up and taken to the Kaunke po­lice post where he was booked un­der the Ex­cise Act.

The vic­tim Man­deep Singh sus­tained se­ri­ous in­juries and is un­der­go­ing treat­ment at the civil hos­pi­tal in Ja­graon.

An­gered by the in­ci­dent, sev­eral farm labour­ers’ or­gan­i­sa­tions gath­ered in front of the of­fice of Ja­graon deputy su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice on Tues­day and threat­ened to launch an ag­i­ta­tion if ac­tion was not taken against the guilty.

Av­tar Singh Ra­sulpuri, gen­eral sec­re­tary of the Pendu Maz­door Union said af­ter Man­deep was kidnapped, he was taken to a liquor vend in Malla vil­lage. Ra­sulpuri al­leged that Man­deep’s kid­nap­pers took 10 liquor bot­tles with them and told the po­lice that these were found in his pos­ses­sion.

Ac­cord­ing to Ra­sulpuri, the po­lice reg­is­tered a case un­der the Ex­cise Act against Man­deep with­out con­duct­ing an in­quiry. He al­leged that Man­deep was also beaten up by the po­lice. Amar­jit Singh, the in-charge of Kaunke po­lice post, has de­nied these al­le­ga­tions.

Ja­graon city DSP Harpal Singh has as­sured the ag­i­ta­tors that the po­lice would in­quire into the mat­ter and take ap­pro­pri­ate ac­tion.
