FARM LABOURER KIDNAPPED, BEATEN UP
LUDHIANA: A farm labourer was kidnapped from his house at Malla village in Jagraon on Sunday allegedly by men hired by a liquor contractor of the area.
He was beaten up and taken to the Kaunke police post where he was booked under the Excise Act.
The victim Mandeep Singh sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at the civil hospital in Jagraon.
Angered by the incident, several farm labourers’ organisations gathered in front of the office of Jagraon deputy superintendent of police on Tuesday and threatened to launch an agitation if action was not taken against the guilty.
Avtar Singh Rasulpuri, general secretary of the Pendu Mazdoor Union said after Mandeep was kidnapped, he was taken to a liquor vend in Malla village. Rasulpuri alleged that Mandeep’s kidnappers took 10 liquor bottles with them and told the police that these were found in his possession.
According to Rasulpuri, the police registered a case under the Excise Act against Mandeep without conducting an inquiry. He alleged that Mandeep was also beaten up by the police. Amarjit Singh, the in-charge of Kaunke police post, has denied these allegations.
Jagraon city DSP Harpal Singh has assured the agitators that the police would inquire into the matter and take appropriate action.
