Man held in fake im­mi­gra­tion case

CHANDI­GARH: A spe­cial in­ves­ti­ga­tion team (SIT), set up last week to curb fake im­mi­gra­tion and em­i­gra­tion cases, on Tues­day ar­rested Cha­ran­jit Singh Bha­tia for al­legedly col­lect­ing money from per­sons on the pre­text of send­ing them abroad.

Bha­tia along with his wife and Aroop Bhat­tacharaya were run­ning 'ACME Car­rier World' in Sec­tor 34. He also has an of­fice at Prime Tower Build­ing near Ja­land­har bus stand. A res­i­dent of Pun­jab, Bha­tia was booked in July un­der sec­tions 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC. He has been de­clared a pro­claimed of­fender (PO) in an­oth- er case.

The po­lice said Bha­tia used to take per­sons to Mum­bai and pro­vided them with fake visas for Canada.

The trio had al­legedly duped per­sons from Pun­jab, Haryana and Chandi­garh of over Rs 2 crore, po­lice said.

The sus­pect is in four- day po­lice cus­tody and the in­ves­ti­ga­tion is go­ing on.
