Office cops shifted to field duties
Some officials of ASP rank only receive and dispatch letters, finds city top cop
LUDHIANA: Having realised that the additional staff of 500 performing clerical duties in the Ludhiana police commissionerate were not required, police commissioner Ishwar Chander has shifted them to police stations, check posts and other sections. Chander noticed that the clerical staff was entrusted with much less work and could be utilised better for maintaining law and order.
The police commissioner convened a meeting of senior officials to know how many people were working as clerks. He was apparently surprised to learn that even officials of the rank of assistant sub-inspector were doing only secretarial work of “receiving and dispatching” letters, while several police stations were facing shortage of staff. Chander expressed displeasure that police personnel were restricting themselves to clerical jobs to “avoid going into the field”.
He has asked ADCP (headquarters) Sukhpal Singh Brar to depute women police personnel for clerical duties. He has ordered that police personnel doing clerical jobs till now be transferred to those police stations that have less staff.
Already facing a staff crunch, the commissionerate is also struggling to maintain law and order, manage traffic and perform duties for VIPS. Ludhiana police have about 3,000 personnel of whom a large number are deputed as gunmen for senior officials, politicians and other influential people. Also, for the time the election code of conduct for the assembly elections is in force, every candidate has been provided with a police official for security.
Interestingly, the police personnel who now face the prospect of being relieved of clerical duties are trying to influence senior officials so as to prevent their transfer.
