In­mates up in arms against jail au­thor­i­ties

Holds protest, de­mand ac­tion against deputy jail su­per­in­ten­dent for ‘thrash­ing’ fel­low in­mate

The Cen­tral Jail,Ta­jpur Road, Lud­hi­ana is mak­ing head­lines these days. Just af­ter 10 mo­bile phones were re­cov­ered from them here on Tues­day, an­other in­ci­dent of a deputy jail su­per­in­ten­dent al­legedly thrash­ing an in­mate has come to light.

To ex­press re­sent­ment in­mates protested and de­manded ac­tion against the deputy jail su­per­in­ten­dent on Wed­nes­day.

They ac­corded to set­tle down the is­sue only af­ter jail su­per­in­ten­dent, RP Loomba’s in­ter­ven­tion, who as­sured that he would bring the is­sue to the notice of higher au­thor­i­ties.

He said, “The in­mates have quar­ters. Af­ter my as­sur­ance the in­mates fi­nally calmed down.”

On Tues­day, the jail was in news when 10 mo­bile phones and two SIM cards were re­cov­ered from their pos­ses­sion dur­ing a search op­er­a­tion.

The Division 7 po­lice had booked the in­mates iden­ti­fied as Baljit Singh, Bagga Singh, Yad­winder Singh, Sukhwinder Singh Sukha, Manish Ku­mar, Narinder Singh, Ma­jor Singh, Raju Singh, Harpreet Singh, Har­jot Singh, Krishan Singh and Bal­winder Singh.

The jail au­thor­i­ties con­ducted the search fol­low­ing a tip-off.

The phones and SIM cards were found hid­den un­der­neath the pil­lows, clothes and other be­long­ings of the in­mates.
